Deadly Monsoon Hits Himachal: 63 Dead, Dozens Missing, Massive Losses Reported

Himachal Pradesh is grappling with days of continuous monsoon rain that has resulted in flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts, claiming at least 63 lives and hundreds more missing in the state.

A red alert for heavy rain in all districts has been extended until Monday, July 7, as the situation is worsening.

₹400 Crore Damage; Mandi District Hit Hard

Government officials indicated property loss has crossed ₹400 crore. “We have been recording over ₹400 crore in losses to date. as registered in our system. But the real damage would be far greater,” stated DC Rana, Special Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority and the Revenue Department.

“Our search, rescue, and restoration efforts are now focused,” he added. Relief work is particularly intense in Mandi district, the most affected area.

Casualties In Districts

The monsoon, which hit Himachal on June 20, has left lives lost in the state. Mandi alone has witnessed 17 deaths, followed by Kangra with 13, Chamba with six, and Shimla with five.

Deaths have also been reported in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul Spiti, Sirmaur, Solan, and Una districts. Over 100 individuals have been injured in the crisis.

More than 40 individuals are still missing from Mandi district, the worst-hit spots being Thunag and Bagsayed under the Assembly constituency of ex-Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur. Karsog and Dharampur regions in Mandi have also been severely affected.

Homes, Roads, and Livelihoods Destroyed

The devastation ranges from homes to infrastructure and livelihoods. Hundreds of houses have been destroyed, and 14 bridges have been lost. Almost 300 animals, including 164 cattle, have perished.

Statewide, more than 500 roads are closed, and over 500 electricity distribution transformers (DTRs) are out of commission, leaving tens of thousands in the dark and without basic necessities. Shortages of water and food are also creating concerns about a humanitarian crisis.

Shocking Visuals Emerge From Across the State

Dramatic footage and photos shared online reveal the destructive power of the monsoon. In one Shimla suburb video, a huge landslide smashes through the side of a hill, filmed and posted by Doordarshan News Himachal Pradesh on X (formerly Twitter).

Another video out of Sirmaur district depicts boulders and mud thundering down a hillside, sweeping over a thin road. The individual recording is heard yelling warnings: “Run for your lives!”

These images reflect the urgency of continued rescue efforts and increasingly vital humanitarian assistance as the state battles one of the most serious monsoon catastrophes in recent history.
