Donald Trump’s signature tax and spending bill teeters on the brink as House Republicans scramble for the last votes. Even with control of both the House and Senate, both GOP leaders are having difficulty coalescing their own ranks. Trump has become increasingly irate. He vented on Truth Social, exhorting Republicans to move expeditiously on what he describes as the “Largest Tax Cuts in History.”

But cost-wary conservatives and moderates who represent swing districts remain reluctant. They fear deep cuts to Medicaid and other social welfare programs. With a July 4 deadline looming, Trump’s tax bill will face a stern test.
Trump Expresses Outrage Over Delays
US President Donald Trump vented his anger in several Truth Social posts on Thursday. He posted, “What are the Republicans waiting for??? What are you trying to prove????” Trump threatened that MAGA members are discontented and are losing party votes. He labelled the delay as “ridiculous” and insisted on passing it immediately.
In a separate post, Trump had written, “FOR REPUBLICANS, THIS SHOULD BE AN EASY YES VOTE.” He made it plain: Republican lawmakers must come together and get the job done.
Bill Offers Tax Cuts, Rolls Back Biden Policies
The legislation calls for dramatic tax reductions the party had long committed to. It also rolls back clean energy credits adopted during Biden’s presidency. It also provides funding for Trump’s main priority—stopping illegal immigration. Speaker Mike Johnson has been secretly working to build support.
“We had GREAT conversations all day,” Trump wrote. “The Republican House Majority is UNITED… delivering the Biggest Tax Cuts in History and MASSIVE Growth.”
Procedural Vote Exposes GOP Divisions
Wednesday evening, a procedural vote exposed Republican divisions. Five Republican lawmakers voted “no,” and eight others abstained. That was enough to throw the momentum out of gears. The vote, intended to establish rules for debate, became a protest vehicle for Republicans calling for changes.
Speaker Johnson Presses Ahead
Speaker Johnson remained optimistic. Speaking on Fox News, he said, “I’ll keep it open for as long as it takes.” He aimed to resolve all concerns and ensure every member cast their vote.
Earlier in the day, Johnson had projected confidence, saying, “We’re in a good place. We’re going to deliver the big beautiful bill.” Trump echoed that, saying the House was ready to vote.
Deadline Looms
Trump had imposed the July 4 deadline for passage. But mounting unease over drastic social program reductions brought the bill to a halt. The GOP is now confronting a high-stakes intra-party struggle.
Will the party coalesce behind Trump’s economic agenda—or fracture further under stress?
