A frightening video recorded the perilous landing of a plane at one of Portugal’s airports. The plane appears to sway in strong winds and bounce upon touching down. In a report by The Sun, 49 flights were cancelled on Tuesday in Madeira, which is a favorite tourist destination, during inclement weather.
Holidaymakers Stranded Amid Cancellations
Annoyed holidaymakers went to Twitter to vent their frustration at being left stranded and starving. The video captured a marabu Airlines A320 flapping in the air like a paper plane as it descended onto the runway. The aircraft touched down once before seeming to rebound off before eventually coming to rest on the Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport runway.
Madeira was recently listed among the globe’s most risky airports because of its inclement weather. A clip of the wobbly aircraft amazed internet users, who commented that it reminded them of landing in the island chain themselves.
Social Media Reactions to the Scary Landing
“This is crazy. I already have a knot in my lower neck just from watching,” said one user, while another revealed: “Landing in Madeira had to be one of the worst moments in my life. That airport is as scary as hell. I felt the plane moving non-stop, and the landing was so bad, God.”
Local newspapers even referred to the blustery day as a “nightmare” for passengers, as numerous flights were redirected to other airports.
Complaints Over Lack of Assistance
One British Airways passenger took to social media complaining about being unable to get back home to London: “I am currently stranded at Madeira Airport with no food, no hotel, and no updates on when the next flight to Gatwick will depart. Is this truly the level of service you aim to provide your customers?”
The Sun also reported that even a Portuguese passenger stated that between 400 and 500 individuals were made to sleep in the airport after their flights were cancelled.
