Filmmaker Karan Johar, known for his unfiltered candour on Koffee With Karan, recently opened up about his secret WhatsApp groups. These groups have top Bollywood celebrities. During an event in London, Johar was asked if he’d ever publish a book about these conversations. His response? “If anyone ever got access to those WhatsApp groups about me and many of my friends in the fraternity, I think we would have to move to London. We may not be able to continue living in our city.”
Karan Johar’s WhatsApp Secrets: Too Candid for Mumbai?
Johar was referring to the now-famous WhatsApp group ‘GUTS’, which includes Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor, and others. This group is dedicated to analysing airport fashion, red carpet looks, and even movies.
“Because let me tell you, they are very candid, honest, and sometimes very b*tchy analysis of our immediate environment and what is going on. We are fashion critics, we are movie critics. We are critics of everything in that group. Everyone has an opinion, and none of us can ever put those opinions out there,” he shared with Mojo Story.
From Gossip to Parenting—Johar Does It All
But it’s not all glam and gossip. Johar also spoke about the more wholesome WhatsApp groups he’s a part of—those involving parenting. As a single father to twins Yash and Roohi, born in 2017 via surrogacy, Johar said, “It can be very daunting, and also hilarious when you’re on two WhatsApp groups with 30 mothers on one and 32 mothers on another. They’re in two divisions: A and B.”
He shared how these groups have supported him through parenting challenges. “Every morning, I wake up to these 62 amazing women saying ‘Ladies!’ And I say, ‘Hello? I’m also on this WhatsApp group!’ But they’re so nurturing and helpful. They’ve really helped me through some tough times… that’s the joy of having twins,” he said.
Karan Johar will soon direct his debut series for Netflix India, following the 2016 release of his memoir An Unsuitable Boy. His last film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani was a major success.
