A newlywed woman named Ridhanya allegedly died by suicide on Sunday after consuming sulphas tablets, reportedly due to continuous dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district.
Police identified the victim as Ridhanya, daughter of Annadurai, a local garment business owner. She was recently married to 28-year-old Kavin Kumar.
Dowry Included Gold, Volvo Car Worth ₹70 Lakh
As part of the marriage settlement, Ridhanya’s family gave 100 sovereigns of gold and a Volvo car worth ₹70 lakh. However, police sources said she was still subjected to harassment from her husband Kavin and his parents — Eswaramoorthy and Chitradevi — who reportedly demanded more dowry.
Ridhanya had shared her ordeal with her parents, but they reassured her that things would get better with time, police added.
Ridhanya Consumed Poison on Way to Temple
On Sunday, while on her way to a temple, Ridhanya allegedly consumed sulphas tablets and died by suicide. Her body was sent to the Tiruppur Government Hospital for postmortem examination.
Authorities acted swiftly and arrested Kavin Kumar along with his parents under charges related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
Audio Message Blames Husband and In-Laws
Times Now accessed a WhatsApp audio message that Ridhanya sent to her father before her death. In the recording, she clearly named her husband and in-laws as the reason behind her extreme step.
“My marriage life is the sole reason for this decision. My husband and his family are the reason. I’ve gone through enough physical and mental harassment. I don’t want this life. They won’t change. Kavin, Eswaramoorthy and Chitradevi are the reason behind me deciding to end my life. My marriage life is a failure. Pls forgive me Mom and Dad,” she said.
Legal Action Underway
Police have launched a thorough investigation and said further action will follow based on postmortem results and digital evidence.
The incident has sparked outrage over ongoing dowry-related crimes, raising questions about women’s safety even in modern, urban households.
