US President Donald Trump indicated that his government does not plan to renew the 90-day window of hold on new tariffs for other nations, whose deadline falls on July 9. In an interview with Fox News, Trump reaffirmed that letters will be delivered to countries announcing impending trade sanctions in case bilateral agreements are not negotiated.
“We’ll look at how a country treats us,” Trump said, adding that tariffs could range from 10% to 50%. The administration initially aimed to negotiate 90 deals in 90 days but has admitted the timeline was ambitious.
TikTok Deal on the Horizon
Trump suggested that a group of “very rich people” is working on making an offer to buy TikTok, the Chinese-owned video-sharing app. Short on details, he indicated that the sale may be subject to approval by China and proposed that President Xi Jinping would approve the transaction.
This is Trump’s third extension of TikTok’s business in the US, following a national prohibition that was briefly put into place in January. He said he would release more information in two weeks.
Trump Brags About ‘Obliterating’ Iran’s Nuclear Facilities
The president further asserted that the recent American attacks had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear facilities. He denounced the leak of an intelligence report that indicated only temporary setbacks and said those involved should be prosecuted.
Iranian authorities brushed aside Trump’s comments, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accusing Trump of hyperbole. The UN nuclear inspector confirmed substantial but not complete damage.
Short-term Relief for Agricultural and Hotel Workers
Despite his tough line on immigration, Trump recognized difficulties in sectors that depended on migrant workers. He raised the possibility of a “temporary pass” to protect hotels and farms from immigration raids, stating it hurts businesses to deport workers.
China Trade Talks and Tariff Strategy
Trump highlighted the imposition of tariffs as necessary for balance in trade with China, approving of a recent agreement on the exportation of rare earth. Trump also suggested potential sanctions relief for Iran if it shows peaceful intention.
