Ukraine’s military Friday said it had hit and destroyed four Russian Su-34 fighter aircraft at an airbase in Russia’s Volgograd Region, the latest in a series of attacks against Moscow’s long-range military infrastructure.
As reported by a statement released on Telegram, the Ukrainian military, in close cooperation with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and special operations forces, conducted the strike on the Marinovka airbase near the city of Volgograd—about 900 kilometers from Ukraine’s border.
Preliminary data testifies that four Su-34s were struck, as well as technical and operational facilities for repairing and maintaining different warplanes,” the statement said. The Ukrainian army reported that the extent of the damage is being assessed at present.
Russian defense officials did not have an immediate reaction to the reported strike.
The Su-34 fighter aircraft is a backbone of Russia’s air attack operations, especially in bombing operations against Ukrainian cities using guided ordnances. The military in Ukraine stressed that these planes have been at the center of Russia’s bombing campaign.
This recent assault comes after a series of profound penetrations by Ukraine into Russia. Previously this month, Ukrainian troops initiated “Operation Spider’s Web,” against several Russian airbases and reportedly crippled a considerable quantity of long-range bombers.
Ukraine has become more and more inclined to target logistical and strategic assets deep inside Russia in an attempt to cripple its capacity to continue the war, now well into the third year.
Although the Ukrainian army failed to mention the type of operation or weapons employed during the Marinovka attack, the operations are generally carried out with drones or sabotage units operating secretly behind the enemy lines.
Experts say the campaign is an indication of Kyiv’s sustained commitment to taking the battle far beyond the frontlines and disrupting Russia’s capacity to fight.
