An unidentified drone struck Taji military base in Baghdad early Tuesday, damaging a radar system, Iraqi security officials confirmed. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Security spokesperson Saad Maan said the drone hit the radar at Taji, while another drone fell near a generator in the Radwaniya district, about 10 km west of Baghdad International Airport, where US troops are stationed as part of an anti-jihadist coalition.
No Group Claims Responsibility
Lieutenant General Walid al-Tamimi stated there were no injuries from either incident. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the drone strikes.
Tensions High After US-Iran Escalation
The drone incidents occurred just hours after Iran launched missile strikes at a US military facility in Qatar, in retaliation for the US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites. However, Iraqi security sources told AFP that Iran has not yet targeted any US troop bases inside Iraq.
With tensions soaring in the region, Iraqi forces are on high alert as investigations continue into the origin and intent behind the drone operations.
