Lionel Messi will feature in Inter Miami’s crucial Group A clash against Porto on Thursday, confirmed coach Javier Mascherano. Despite a viral video showing Messi touching his left leg during training, Mascherano reassured fans that the Argentine legend feels fully fit and is ready to play.
Messi Cleared to Play in Key Club World Cup Match
“Leo is fit, he trained, he completed the whole session,” Mascherano told reporters. “He was touching his leg. Sometimes people touch themselves, but there’s no problem. He’s fit, and obviously he will play tomorrow.”
This confirmation puts to rest the swirling speculation about Messi’s availability after Wednesday’s training video sparked concern online. Inter Miami will rely heavily on Messi’s influence as they look for their first win in the tournament.
Mascherano also confirmed that left-back Jordi Alba is back in contention after missing the previous match due to injury. “We’ll evaluate what’s best for us, if he starts or not,” he said with a smile. “Actually, I already know, but I won’t tell you.”
Miami Faces Major Test Against Porto
Mascherano emphasized that Inter Miami must keep possession to challenge Porto, a team known for its Champions League pedigree.
“We have players who feel much more comfortable when they’re in possession,” Mascherano said. “Of course, we’re facing a team that also is used to doing that… but on the pitch, we’re 11 against 11.”
Midfield veteran Sergio Busquets, another of Messi’s former Barcelona teammates, also acknowledged the challenge ahead. “They are a team that compete every year for their league, against other great teams like Sporting and Benfica,” Busquets said.
“We’ll try to be as solid as possible, stick close together, and try to do the best we can as a team. If we get chances, we have the individuals (who can finish them), but above all we have to be solid and keep a clean sheet.”
With Messi cleared to start, Inter Miami fans will hope their team can rise to the occasion. Fans hope that they can secure a statement win against European opposition.
