A majority of Israelis support their government’s recent airstrikes on Iran, according to a new opinion poll conducted by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in collaboration with Agam Labs. The survey, conducted on June 15-16, found that 70% of Israelis backed the initial strikes, while 16% opposed them and 14% remained undecided.
The strikes, launched late last week, targeted Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and military command centers. Iran responded by firing missiles at Israeli cities, escalating tensions across the region.
Mixed Views on Continuing the Operation
Despite support for the opening strikes, Israeli opinion is evenly split on whether the military campaign should continue. According to the survey:
- 33% believe the operation should not go on, fearing high Israeli casualties
- The remaining respondents are either in favor of continuing or undecided
At least 24 Israelis have been killed and 592 injured in Iran’s retaliatory attacks, while Iran has suffered 224 deaths and over 1,200 injuries so far.
Nuclear Threat Concerns and U.S. Role
The poll also revealed strong concern about Iran’s nuclear program:
- 80% support strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities
- 40% want U.S. support in these military efforts
- However, only 24% believe Israel can eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat alone
- 16% favor diplomacy over continued conflict
Preparedness and Public Sentiment
According to the survey:
- 61% believe Israel is moderately or highly prepared for Iran’s missile attacks
- The remaining 39% feel the country is underprepared
The poll had a representative sample of 1,057 respondents and a margin of error of 4.2%.
