Will Smith turned down Inception, Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending sci-fi masterpiece, and now admits that walking away from the film still haunts him. Speaking to the UK’s Kiss radio, the Oscar-winning actor revealed that Nolan approached him first for the lead role in the 2010 hit, before casting Leonardo DiCaprio.
Smith said, “Chris Nolan brought me Inception first, and I didn’t get it. I’ve never said that out loud.”
He laughed about it but admitted the decision became a painful memory, adding, “It hurts too bad to talk about.”

Missed Roles That Still Haunt Will Smith
At the time, Will Smith couldn’t connect with the concept of alternate realities. He explained that such stories “don’t pitch well,” which led him to decline the role that ultimately cemented DiCaprio’s dominance in modern cinema.
Smith’s admission comes after a history of similar career moves; he also famously declined The Matrix, calling it “one of my beautiful scars,” and Django Unchained, which he passed on due to moral concerns. Christopher Nolan’s Inception Role
Christopher Nolan didn’t initially envision Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role. According to reports, he first offered the script to Brad Pitt, giving him only 48 hours to respond. Nolan had gone to Will Smith when Brad Pitt had declined, but he, too, had passed. DiCaprio accepted and proceeded to provide one of his most renowned performances after Nolan approached him about it.
