The untimely death of entrepreneur Sunjay Kapur has created shockwaves in the corporate sector and the world of entertainment. His untimely death has left some pressing questions regarding the future of Sona Comstar, the billion-dollar auto component firm he headed. Kapur, once married to actress Karisma Kapoor, headed one of the biggest auto component makers in the world.
After hearing about his death, Sona Comstar’s shares fell 7% when the markets reopened on Friday. The firm, which Kapur inherited in 2015 after his father’s death, has since developed into a major player in the international auto components industry. The company’s market capitalization stands at about Rs. 31,000 crore (about $4 billion) according to Bloomberg.
Upon his death, the company issued a formal statement, “His vision, values, and commitment to excellence has created an enduring legacy for the company. We assure our customers, business partners, employees, and shareholders that our operations and prospects are unaffected as we pay tribute to his legacy.”
Who will Lead Sona Comstar
No officially declared successor of Kapur in Sona Comstar exists currently. None of his three children are likely to take charge of the business in the near future, but his sisters might take over the management role, as reported. The company’s current board is also likely to remain in control, as reported by India.com.
Sunjay is left behind by three children. His two older kids, Samaira (20) and Kiaan (14), from his union with Karisma Kapoor are not interested in the business. His youngest son, Azarias, who is only six years old, is from his marriage to Priya Sachdev.
How Sunjay Kapur’s Rs. 10,300 Crore Fortune May Be Inherited
As of his death, Forbes reported Sunjay Kapur’s net worth at $1.2 billion (around ₹10,300 crore). He had peaked at $1.6 billion (around Rs. 13,000 crore) in 2022 and 2024. Under Indian law, administration of his estate and property now devolves to his wife, Priya Sachdev.
However, his kids with Karisma Kapoor are also said to be financially independent. Kapur had apparently established a legacy arrangement wherein he gave bonds for Rs. 14 crore to Samaira and Kiaan, besides ensuring a monthly income of Rs. 10 lakh to each of them.
Sunjay Kapur was previously married to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani from 1996 until 2000, then Karisma Kapoor from 2003 to 2016. He wed model-turned-actress Priya Sachdev in 2017. Unfortunately, the 53-year-old died from a heart attack while playing polo in London on Thursday.
