BTS Members RM and V Discharged from South Korean Military Service

RM and V, members of the world-famous K-pop group BTS, finished their military service on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. They saluted fans outside the military base in Chuncheon City, where about 200 supporters had gathered. Many fans had traveled from around the world to see them. One excited fan, Reina Lorena Quintero Sevilla, flew nearly 18 hours from Mexico City. She said, “I swear, it didn’t feel that long because we’re so excited to be here, to watch the boys get released, excited to be in South Korea, in the hometowns of our boys, who we love, who we adore.”

BTS Members Join Service at Different Times

RM and V joined the army in December 2023. By that time, Jin, J-Hope, and Suga had already begun their service. Jin, the oldest member of BTS, completed his duty in June 2024. J-Hope followed in October of the same year.

More Discharges Coming Soon

Jimin and JungKook are also set to complete their service on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. Meanwhile, Suga is working as a social service agent, a civilian alternative to military duty. He will finish his term later this month. The group’s agency has confirmed that BTS will reunite sometime in 2025 once all members complete their service.

Why Military Service Is Required

In South Korea, the law requires all able-bodied men between 18 and 28 to serve in the military for 18 to 21 months. This rule helps the country stay prepared for threats from North Korea.

No Exemptions for K-pop Stars

Some people, like top athletes and classical musicians, may receive exemptions if they win international awards. However, K-pop stars do not qualify for this. Despite public debate, BTS did not receive special treatment.

Law Change Allowed BTS to Delay Service

In 2020, the National Assembly changed the Military Service Act. This allowed K-pop stars like BTS to delay their enlistment until age 30. In 2022, the group’s agency confirmed that all members would serve as required by law.
