Billionaire businessman Elon Musk fueled his political battle with US President Donald Trump once again by posting a divisive online poll on Thursday. Musk posed the question of whether it was time to create a new political party in America that “actually represents the 80% in the middle” to his more than 200 million X followers.
The post caught fire, collecting 4,143,244 votes, with a resounding 81% saying ‘yes’, ironically mirroring increasing public discontent with mainstream parties.
Elon Musk Swipes at Trump: “I’ll Be Around for 40+ Years”
Elon Musk also fueled the fire by reacting to a conservative supporter who had posted that Republicans would have to decide between Musk and Trump. Musk replied, “Oh and some food for thought as they ponder this question: Trump has 3.5 years left as President, but I will be around for 40+ years…”

The feud between the two billionaires has moved fast. The drama started after Trump made remarks to journalists in the Oval Office about being “disappointed in Elon” for being against his “Big Beautiful Bill.” Trump blamed Musk for misbehaving because the bill eliminated electric vehicle credits, saying that the Tesla CEO “went CRAZY” after being denied special access to the Oval Office.
Mixed Reactions Flood Social Media
The post caused a torrent of responses among users on X. One of the supporters said, “Yes, 100%! Absolutely. We also need ranked choice so that people aren’t afraid of helping the party they hate the most.” Another user stated, “June 5th, 2025 — Start of the Second American Revolution!”
But criticism also ensued. Some doubted Musk’s right-wing loyalty, with one commenter posting, “The MAGA party. We need you and Trump to discuss privately and sort this out. Come to a happy middle ground. So disappointing?!” Another commented, “A new political party isn’t going to make a difference.”
Musk had previously claimed his influence on American politics by stating, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate… Such ingratitude.”
Trump Finally Addresses the Schism
President Trump spoke out publicly for the first time about the split at a gathering with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He stated, “Elon and I had an incredible relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore… I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”
