Prince Harry Makes Surprise Visit to Wounded Veterans in Ukraine

Prince Harry has traveled to amputees and injured military personnel at an orthopaedic clinic in Ukraine, having spent two days at the London high court hearing an appeal against the government decision to withdraw security protection from him when he is in the UK.

Visit to Superhumans Centre in Lviv by Prince Harry

The 40-year-old prince visited injured soldiers at the Superhumans Centre in Lviv, which heals and rehabilitates wounded military men and civilians, including children, who have been hurt by the war.

Prince Harry, who was in the British army for 10 years, was joined by a delegation from the Invictus Games Foundation, including four veterans who had undergone similar rehab experiences.

Prince Harry Extends Comprehensive Care for Victims of War

He was shown around the centre, which offers prosthetics, reconstructive surgery and psychological support at no charge, and is also reported to have met Ukraine’s veterans affairs minister, Natalia Kalmykova.

More than 3,000 patients visit the centre annually, states its website. It is in western Ukraine, a region which has regularly been hit by Russian missiles, and the visit was not publicised until Prince Harry was abroad.

Prior Connection With the Centre’s CEO

In February, the prince saw the Superhumans chief executive, Olga Rudneva, at the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style sporting event for wounded and ill military personnel and veterans, in Canada.

She gave him a bracelet from the rehabilitation centre, made for all the centre’s ambassadors, which bears the words “Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire” in English and Ukrainian.

She also gave him a personal gift from a double amputee, a veteran, who had met Harry on ski runs in Whistler.

Royal Family’s Broader Support for Ukraine

Harry is the second member of the royal family to have traveled to Ukraine since the war in Russia broke out in 2022. His aunt Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, also made an unscheduled trip to the country last year.

The other members of the royal household have also made it publicly clear where they stand with regard to supporting the conflict-hit country. Last month, King Charles had tea with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his Norfolk home just two days after Donald Trump’s White House meeting with Zelenskyy became acrimonious in the sight of the global media.

Prince William also met Ukrainian refugees during a two-day trip to Estonia last month.
