Congress Urges PM Modi to Address Parliament on Trump’s Tariff Allegations

Congress party has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inform Parliament about the recent assertions by former US President Donald Trump that India has agreed to cut tariffs on imports from America.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh expressed apprehension about the possible implication of tariffs cut on Indian manufacturers and farmers.

Labeling Trump’s comments on X, Ramesh wondered about the government’s position, saying, “What has the Modi Government committed to? Is the interest of Indian farmers and of Indian manufacturing being sacrificed? The PM should bring Parliament into confidence when Parliament reconvenes on March 10.”

Trump had claimed that India levies “massive tariffs” that limit US companies and asserted, “They’ve agreed. By the way, they want to reduce their tariffs way down now because someone is finally revealing them for what they’ve done.”

His remarks follow Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s trade talks in Washington, DC. Earlier, Trump had threatened 100% tariffs on India over high duties on US imports.

With Parliament to resume on March 10, the Congress party demands that Modi respond to these issues and make clear India’s stance on tariff talks.
