A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal early Tuesday morning, causing tremors in Kolkata and several areas of West Bengal. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the quake occurred at 6:10 AM IST at a depth of 91 km. Although residents experienced brief panic, no immediate damage or casualties have been reported.

NCS Confirms Earthquake Details

The National Center for Seismology shared information about the earthquake on X (formerly Twitter). Their post read: “EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal.”

Shortly after the tremors, many people took to social media to describe their experiences. As a result, hashtags related to the earthquake trended for a brief period. Users actively discussed the impact and checked on one another’s safety.

One user wrote: “Earthquake Alert! Received a Google Earthquake Alert at around 6:10 AM in Kolkata. Reports suggest the epicenter might be 175 km from Odisha. Did anyone else feel the tremors? Awaiting official confirmation. Stay alert and stay safe!”

Meanwhile, disaster management teams and local authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Even though no significant damage has been reported, officials have advised residents to remain cautious. Additionally, they have urged people to follow safety guidelines in case of aftershocks.
