The Indian Farmers Union is gearing up for another protest, with the leaders of the union announcing that five farmer groups will march in Chandigarh from January 18. Balwinder Singh Rajewal, a leader of the Indian Farmers Union, revealed that the protest is being organized concerning concerns over compensation and the diminishing groundwater levels. He stated that according to scientific surveys, Punjab’s water table is expected to decline further by 2025, posing a serious concern. Balwinder Singh Rajewal expressed dissatisfaction with the rate hike for sugarcane, stating that it is not proportional. He mentioned that the protest will be staged not in Mohali but in Chandigarh, emphasizing that Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab, and Punjabis have a right to voice their concerns there. He emphasized the importance of allowing peaceful protests in a democracy, and restricting someone from protesting is akin to killing democracy.
